The largest credit union in the United States is Navy Federal Credit Union, with $204.4 billion in assets and 15,517,448 members at June 30, 2026. State Employees' Credit Union (North Carolina) is second with $60.0 billion and 2,998,339 members, and SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union in California is third by assets with $37.2 billion. Navy Federal holds about one dollar in every twelve held by all US credit unions.
Every number on this page comes from the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) 5300 Call Report quarterly data for the cycle ending June 30, 2026. If you came to learn what a credit union is, start with what is a credit union. If you came to see which ones are biggest, and what size means for you as a member, read on.
What this ranking counts
NCUA collects a call report from each federally insured credit union every quarter and publishes the results as downloadable files. This page uses two fields from those files: "TOTAL ASSETS" (account 010) and "Number of current members (not number of accounts)" (account 083). NCUA's instructions for the member field say to "report the actual number of members, not the number of accounts."
Three choices shape the list:
- One quarter, one date. The figures are for June 30, 2026. Sources that rank credit unions by a different quarter will show different numbers, which is why published lists of the biggest credit unions disagree.
- Register names. The tables show each credit union's name as the NCUA register prints it, which is limited to 35 characters and often leaves out "Credit Union" or "Federal Credit Union". "Pentagon" is the register entry for Pentagon Federal Credit Union, whose own site shows that name. Check a credit union's own site for its trading name.
- Credit unions that file the report. The June 2026 files list 4,299 credit unions with total assets of $2.52 trillion and 147.4 million members.

What the ranking shows
The first place is not close. Navy Federal's $204.4 billion is more than three times the $60.0 billion of the second-placed credit union, and its 15.5 million members are more than five times the 3.0 million of the second. Navy Federal alone holds 8.1% of all credit union assets in the files.
The top 10 hold about a fifth of the sector. The 10 largest credit unions by assets hold 19.0% of the total, and the top 25 hold 27.4%.
California, New York, Utah, Florida, Texas and Virginia recur. California has four of the 25, New York three, and Virginia, Utah, Florida and Texas two each.
Rank by assets and rank by members differ. SchoolsFirst is third by assets but seventh by members. Pentagon is fifth by assets but third by members. Boeing Employees is fourth by assets and fifth by members.

The same ten names appear in both top tens, and only the order changes. The Golden 1 is ninth by assets but tenth by members, and Suncoast is tenth by assets but ninth by members. Alliant, 11th by assets, is 14th by members.
How big is the typical credit union?
The names above are the exception. Most credit unions are small. Here is how the 4,299 credit unions in the June 2026 files spread by size.
| Total assets | Credit unions | Share of credit unions | Combined assets | Combined members |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $10 million | 771 | 17.9% | $3.2 billion | 533,522 |
| $10 million to under $50 million | 1,135 | 26.4% | $30.3 billion | 2,712,896 |
| $50 million to under $100 million | 573 | 13.3% | $41.7 billion | 3,178,440 |
| $100 million to under $500 million | 1,061 | 24.7% | $247.1 billion | 16,144,896 |
| $500 million to under $1 billion | 280 | 6.5% | $201.3 billion | 12,234,445 |
| $1 billion to under $10 billion | 454 | 10.6% | $1,307.7 billion | 70,788,405 |
| $10 billion or more | 25 | 0.6% | $691.4 billion | 41,797,760 |
Source: same files, cycle date June 30, 2026.
Two readings follow. First, the median credit union holds $68.3 million in assets and has 4,818 members, a small local institution. Second, 479 credit unions (11.1%) hold $1 billion or more, and they hold 79.2% of all assets and 76.4% of all members. The 2,479 credit unions under $100 million are 57.7% of the total by number and hold 3.0% of the assets.
What size means for you as a member
Size does not change who owns a credit union. Every credit union in these tables is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members, who elect a volunteer board, as described on MyCreditUnion.gov. A big credit union and a small one follow the same rule: under 12 U.S.C. 1760, a federal credit union member has no more than one vote, whatever the number of shares held.
What size does change is what you can use:
- Branches, ATMs and apps. A larger credit union can usually run its own branch network and technology. Smaller ones often use shared branching and co-op ATM networks. Check the specific credit union before you switch, because apps and hours vary.
- Who can join. Size says nothing about eligibility. The largest credit union, Navy Federal, describes its field of membership on its own site as one that "goes beyond current and retired members of the military to include their families and household members, Department of Defense personnel and more." SchoolsFirst says it serves "educational communities in California." Several of the others are open to people who live or work in a region. Eligibility is set by each credit union's charter under 12 U.S.C. 1759, which allows a single common bond, multiple common bonds or a community. See credit unions anyone can join to check which ones are open to you.
- Insurance. A federally insured credit union is covered by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund up to $250,000 per member and ownership category, whatever its size. See NCUSIF explained.
For deposit rates, loan rates and fees, check each credit union's own page on the day you decide. They change often.
How credit unions compare with other US cooperatives
The NCB Co-op 100, an annual ranking of America's largest cooperatives, ranks by revenue across all sectors rather than by assets. In its 2025 report, which uses 2024 data, Navy Federal Credit Union is fourth overall by revenue, behind CHS, Dairy Farmers of America and Land O'Lakes. The full top 25 across sectors is on largest cooperatives in the US.
How to read the ranking
Assets and members move every quarter, so the order of some of the lower rows will change with the next NCUA release. Members are counted, not accounts, so one person can be a member of more than one credit union. The NCUA register shortens names, so match a row to a credit union using its state and its own site.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the largest credit union in the US?
Navy Federal Credit Union, with $204.4 billion in assets and 15,517,448 members at June 30, 2026, according to NCUA's call report data.
What is the second largest credit union?
By assets and by members, State Employees' Credit Union (North Carolina) (the NCUA register lists it as "State Employees'"), with $60.0 billion and 2,998,339 members at June 30, 2026.
Why do lists of the biggest credit unions disagree?
They use different quarters, different data sources or different measures. This page uses NCUA's June 30, 2026 call report and prints both assets and members. A list built on another quarter will show different totals.
How many credit unions are there in the US?
The June 30, 2026 NCUA files list 4,299 credit unions that filed a call report, with $2.52 trillion in assets and 147.4 million members. Counts from other sources may differ because of scope and date.
Is the biggest credit union the best one for me?
Not necessarily. Size tells you about scale, not about fit. What matters is whether you are eligible to join, whether it has the accounts and loans you want, and how its fees and rates compare on the day you apply.
Are the largest credit unions open to anyone?
Some are and some are not. Each credit union sets its own field of membership under its charter. Check its own membership page, or use the credit unions anyone can join hub.
Are large credit unions insured?
Federally insured credit unions are covered by the NCUA's Share Insurance Fund up to $250,000 per member for each ownership category, regardless of size. Check that your credit union is federally insured with NCUA's own tools. See NCUSIF explained.
