Credit Unions Anyone Can Join

These credit unions say on their own websites that anyone can become a member, either directly or by joining a partner association or giving to its foundation. Each one is listed largest first, with its own wording and the site we read it on.

How “anyone can join” works

Most credit unions serve a defined field of membership: people who live or work in an area, work for certain employers, or belong to certain groups. A few accept any applicant. Others open the door through an association: you join a named nonprofit or give to the credit union's foundation, and that membership qualifies you. Some credit unions pay that step for you.

Once you are in, relatives and people in your household can usually join too. Whichever route you take, opening a share (savings) account makes you a member-owner. Read the credit union's own rules before you apply.

Three routes into membership: Open to anyone, Association route, Family route. Each ends with opening a share (savings) account, which makes you a member-owner.Open to anyonethe credit union takes any applicantAssociation routejoin the named group or give to its foundationFamily routea relative or household member already belongsOpen a shareaccountyou are now a member-owner
Every route ends the same way: a small deposit into a share account makes you a member. Check the credit union's own wording for the exact rules.

Who can join a credit union, by type

Open membership is the exception. Most credit unions take members by where they live or work, or by employer or group, so a local credit union is often the easiest one to join.
